Black History Writing Prompts for Students

Writer's picture: Notbk SCNotbk SC

Here are a few writing prompts to inspire reflection, imagination and a broader understanding of our history and its continuing impact. Explore moments that inspire and empower our future generations because, as they say, you can't know where you're going until you know where you've been.

  1. Personal Hero: Write about a historical figure who inspires you and explain why. How have their achievements influenced your life?

  2. A Day in the Life: Imagine you are living during the Civil Rights Movement. Describe a day in your life, your experiences, and the challenges you face.

  3. Hidden Figures: Research an often-overlooked African American contributor to science, the arts, or history. Write a biography highlighting their achievements and impact on society.

  4. Modern Heroes: Choose a contemporary African American leader or influencer. Discuss their contributions and how they are shaping today’s society.

  5. Family History: Interview a family member about their experiences growing up. Compare their stories with what you learn about key events in African American history.

  6. Creative Expression: Write a poem or a short story inspired by a significant event or person in black history. Express your thoughts and emotions through creative writing.

  7. Dreams for the Future: Reflect on the progress made in African American history and write about your hopes and dreams for the future. What changes do you wish to see, and how do you plan to contribute to that future?

We hope you found these ideas useful. Happy writing!
